EAPN Ireland, in association with the October 17 UN Day for the Eradication of Poverty Campaign, held a lunchtime seminar on Monday 12 October 2009 on building support in the media and amongst the general public for tackling poverty, social exclusion and inequality.
Many community and voluntary groups have expressed concern about the difficulties in keeping poverty and exclusion issues on the national/local agenda. The activities around the UN Day for the Eradication of Poverty provided a unique opportunity to tackle these issues. Speakers recommended strategies for engaging with and impacting on the media agenda, why some stories work and others don’t, how best to tell the stories of the groups that are represented, etc. Community and voluntary groups, anti-poverty campaigners, students, members of the media, NGO workers, communications officers, etc.
