Most of these children grow up in poor families, who are increasingly struggling to provide them with a decent life. This is a social crime in an EU that prides itself on its social model, an attack on fundamental rights and a failure to invest in people and in our future. Can the EU afford the price?
Leading human rights organisations meet in Dublin with Irish Presidency to strategise on action to move forward the fight against child poverty in the EU
Dublin, 10 April 2013 – One in four children in the European Union is at risk of poverty, or already experiencing it. That equals 25.3 million children.In the wake of the economic crisis and austerity measures poverty levels are escalating across the continent, particularly child poverty. A recent European Commission Recommendation calls on EU governments to “invest in children – to break the cycle of disadvantage”1.
In Dublin, on 10-11 April 2013, EAPN, Eurochild and UNICEF organised a political roundtable and advocacy seminar “Taking action to fight child poverty and to promote child well-being”. This was also the occasion for EAPN and Eurochild to present their explainer on child poverty and well-being in the EU, and for Unicef to present their Report Card 11 on child well-being.

21/03 – EAPN was present in Montpellier during the annual conference organised by EAPN France together with Supagro and INRA (French University and Research Institute on Agronomy) dedicated to Right to Food in Montpellier. During this conference, Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food outlined the challenges and ways forward to make this right operational in the Member States.
11/03 – EAPN attended the debate organised by the Oservatoire Social Européen together with VLEVA (the liaison agency Flanders-Europe) on the Social Investment Package, together with several NGOs, researchers and practitionners.
