The first ever European Citizens Initiative (ECI) to collect over 1 million signatures welcomes the political debate that is taking place all over Europe on water and sanitation. The positive impact of the citizens’ mobilisation is already being felt in many member states and at EU level. More information here.
On 21/02 – Caritas held a significant event in the EESC showcasing the main findings and recommendations of the Caritas Europa Shadow Report on Europe 2020 strategy and the Crisis Monitoring report in Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Spain and Greece. EAPN intervened in the panel chaired by Pierre Baussand, Director of Soial Platform on how the EU can stimulate inclusive growth the European Semester, together with Egbert Holthuis, European Commission, Veronica Lope Fontagné, EPP Rapporteur on the Opinion on the AGS 2013, and Robert Urbé, Policy Coordinator, Caritas Luxembourg. A debate was held at the end of the day on whether the EU is adopting an effective response to the crisis.
22/02 – EAPN policy coordinator Sian Jones intervened in a capacity-building workshop on ‘A minimum income in the EU’ as part of the Green European Foundation workshop on the social consequences of the crises – analysis and proposals.

15/02 – Skopje – The event highlighted the need for the introduction of adequate minimum income in FYROM and aimed at launching this process, starting by defining it and introducing on the social policy agenda of the Republic of Macedonia.
Brussels, 15 February 2013 – The European Commission will adopt the long-awaited Social Investment Package on the 20th February. For the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN), the package must provide a coherent strategy for fighting poverty, backed by EU funding, capable of achieving the poverty target. It is vital that the package includes concrete measures that defend and show the benefits of social spending and infrastructures.
Brussels, 11 February – Yesterday, the first up and running European Citizens Initiative (ECI) ‘Water is a Human Right’ made history as also being the first ECI in the history of the European Union to have collected over 1 million signatures.
