The substantial grant will support their work in the run up to and during the 2010 European Year Against Poverty and Social Exclusion.
For EAPN such investment as well as being necessary for people living in poverty is also good for the economy as the investment will immediately be put back into the economy in the form of spending on essential goods and services.
Economic recovery plan, partnership, development of bottom-up approaches and positive approach to “activation” were central themes in the debate.
Despite some modest improvements in at risk of poverty levels, this is often matched by deterioration in the poverty levels for specific groups.
This report builds on the EAPN history of engagement in the EU Inclusion strategy (OMC Social Protection and Social Inclusion) and assesses the National Strategic Reports on Social Protection and Social Inclusion 2008-2010.
Brussels, 27 November 2008 – For EAPN the current “Growth and Jobs” focus has clearly failed to reduce poverty and social exclusion, even in times of boom, so how are we supposed to trust that more of the same will help us in times of crisis?
EAPN member networks will be closely monitoring the impact of the crisis on people experiencing poverty and people at risk of poverty and will be building alliances with other actors to produce further proposals in the coming months.
The delegates stressed the opportunity, provided by the current situation, to redouble efforts in the fight against poverty and for the greatest guarantee of social rights.
EAPN is concerned about the limit of the priorities identified and the absence of a priority on solidarity and sustainability.
