EAPN publishes Widening the Gap – EAPN Assessment of the National Reform Programmes 2013
In 2013, EAPN members attempted to engage again in the NRPs, and proposed Alternative 2013 Country-Specific Recommendations based on its NRPs assessment. During this year EAPN looked for improvement – but what progress can we see? This report “Widening the Gap – EAPN Assessment of the National Reform Programmes 2013” sets out the EAPN 2013 assessment of progress on the poverty and other targets through the European Semester in the NRPs, as well as on participation of people experiencing poverty and their organisations.
EAPN attends EPC Briefing: Commissioner Andor presents his vision on the Social Dimension of the EMU
24/09 – Commissioner Andor presented his vision on the Social Dimension of the EMU to a well-attended EPC briefing, prior to the publication of the Commission Communication, due to be published on 3 October. Commissioner Andor talked of Europe facing an ‘existential crisis’, resulting from the insufficiencies of the economic framework of the EMU and the failure to take action on social imbalances. The ‘polarisation and widening gap’ between the north/centre and the peripheries in Europe, and regions were reaching a state of ‘social emergency’, as highlighted by President Barroso in his State of the Union Speech in September.

You then get an insight on the attack on the welfare state in 4 bail-out countries, namely Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Romania. France, the UK and Macedonia, as a candidate country to the EU, get also a particular focus. 3 other organisations, the European Public Services Union (EPSU), Caritas and the ILO, have also contributed to this Mag and share the conviction that Change is possible, should political leaders want it!

EAPN Poland has begun a social campaign “Nothing for us without us. Nothing for you without you” about participation of PEP in consultation processes. EAPN Iceland new publication on poverty
EAPN Iceland has contributed to Icelandic publication “Prosperity – Fighting poverty in Iceland” (English version), published by the Church Aid and the Reykjavík Red Cross and drafted within the Collaborative group on an even better community. Read it here in pdf.

19-21/09 – EAPN Spain and EAPN Castilla y Leon organize the 2nd National Congress of people experiencing poverty in Valladolid, which is also the 9th meeting of People experiencing poverty organised at national level in Spain. Under the slogan “Citizenship Rights, from information to participation”, the Congress gathers over 160 people from all over Spain will gather at this meeting in order to meet fundamental rights that are recognized as citizens of the European Union. It takes place in the framework of the 2013 European Year of Citizens 2013.

11/09 – News Splash n°22: On 10 September we stopped collecting signatures for the first successful European Citizens’ Initiative “Water is a human right!”. Nearly 1.9 million citizens have signed the statement of support demanding that the European Commission “implement the human right to water and sanitation in European legislation”.
