ILO highlights impact of Social and Solidarity-based economy on decent jobs creation

On 19 October, the ILO participated in a Conference on “The Social and Solidarity-based economy, a driver for change in the South”, organized by the Centre Tricontinental (CETRI) of Louvain, Belgium. More than 10% of all jobs worldwide are provided in the social and solidarity-based economy (SEE), which puts people at the heart of its operations. The sector weathered the crisis successfully and it continues to grow. SEE-organizations generate decent work opportunities and stimulate and strengthen local development.

04/11/2015 – Equality and non-discrimination are two of the core values of the European Union. The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU prohibits any discrimination based on race, colour, ethnic or social origin and its chapters on freedoms and solidarity establish the right to education, preventive healthcare and medical treatment. The charter also guarantees respect for cultural, religious and linguistic diversity. Yet, despite the existence of a robust anti-discrimination and human rights framework coupled with an EU framework on Roma inclusion, Roma still face widespread discrimination across Europe. The Roma are Europe’s largest minority. They continue to experience racially motivated attacks and anti-Gypsyism.

06/11/2015 – Having developed incrementally, EU social and labour rights only in 2009 became legally binding through the Charter of Fundamental Rights for the European Union (CFREU). The study requested by EMPL Committee develops the concept of a constitutionally conditioned Internal Market as a way to overcome the perception that social and labour rights limit Internal Market law. On this basis, alternative responses to perceived tensions are proposed.

06/11/2015 – The Mussel & Steak Bar based in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket has become Scotland’s first Living Wage accredited restaurant. The family run restaurant specializes in surf and turf, and currently employs 24 staff.  By becoming an accredited Living Wage employer, the Mussel & Steak Bar has committed to paying their staff £8.25 per hour – the new rate announced on Monday 2 November.

Conditional cash transfers (CCTs) in general aim to exert an immediate effect on poverty by raising income, while at the same time contributing to a longer-term reduction of poverty by improving beneficiaries’ future potential to earn a living, in so doing contributing to a drop in demand for such benefits. Within the range of CCTs implemented to date, behaviour related to education, health and nutrition constitute frequent foci, with education and health the most common combination.

EAPN mobilises to get MEPs to sign Written Declaration on Investing in Children

EAPN members are contributing to the the EU Alliance’s efforts to gather signatures of the Written Declaration on Investing in Children from at least half of the Members of the European Parliament (i.e. 376 members) by the 7th December 2015 and to raise public awareness about the campaign. To name a few: in the context of the Cypriot Children’s Week 2015, EAPN Cyprus is organizing an event on 21st November (in co-organisation with the PCCPWC, Pancyprian Coordinating Committee for the Protection and Welfare of Children) when which 6 MEPs from Cyprus will be invited to sign the Declaration; EAPN Estonia, Germany, Portugal, Malta and Netherlands also sent requests for signatures to the MEPs of their countries and/or are raising the visibility of the campaign through their communication channels.
