2019PEP | The Time is Now to make Europe poverty free!

The 2019 PeP Meeting took place on 18 and 19 November, at the beginning of a new term of the European Commission and European Parliament. During this meeting, we took the opportunity to raise awareness about the history of PeP meetings, organised since 2000, and to present the political priorities that people experiencing poverty (PeP) would like to see on the agenda of the new European Institutions namely:

    1. Access to housing,
    2. Participation of people experiencing poverty in the lives of their communities and societies,
    3. Access to adequate minimum income,
    4. Access to good quality health care services,
    5. and access to decent jobs and equal employment opportunities for different categories.

Among the 130 participants were national delegations of EAPN members from 32 countries, representatives from civil society and trade unions, and volunteer groups. As in previous years, the PEP Meeting was a unique opportunity to share their stories of hardship and hope with one another, and with EU decision-makers including:

    • Nicolas Schmit, Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights
    • Dragoș Pîslaru, Member of the European Parliament, Renew Europe Group
    • Katarina Ivanković-Knežević, Director for Social Affairs, DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, European Commission
    • Pierfrancesco Majorino, Member of the European Parliament, Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats
    • Saila Ruuth, State Secretary, Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Finland
