15 MEPs took part in the meeting and several high-profile officials from the Commission. These European meetings are hosted each year by the Spring Presidency but on the invitation of people experiencing poverty who, this year, concluded on the following main priorities calling on the EU to focus on people rather than on competitivenes:
- participation of people experiencing poverty in decision-making processes at all stages
- responsibility and accountability of decision makers
- guarantee of fundamental rights linked to affordable, quality and safe housing, social services, food, decent work and education for all
- protection of families
- control of the banking sector control
These priorities call on EU leaders to reverse the current trend of cutting public services which will not put an end to the crisis but rather worsen the difficulties of not only one fith of the EU population facing poverty but also of several other millions of people at risk of poverty.
