EAPN France: poverty increased in 2007

eapn-franceIn 2007, the President of the Republic committed to reduce poverty by a third in 5 years. On the occasion of the World Day of the Eradication of Poverty, the Government presented its 1st follow-up report, which shows that poverty increased, as in previous years since 2003.  

The level of economic poverty, measuring the level of poor households’ financial resources, increased in 2%. Poor people have become poorer.

Most indicators have risen, notably :

  • Young people (18-24): 22 % living in poverty. 6% rise between 2006 and 2007 whereas the Government had planned a 15% decrease in 5 years.
  • Children: 18 % living in poverty.
  • Working Poor: 21% rise between 2003 and 2006..
  • Almost 3 times more poverty in urban and deprived areas (ZUS) 
  • Health: 8 % rise in renouncement to healthcare between 2004 and 2006.
  • Overindebtedness: 11 % rise between 2003 and 2008.
