Eluned Morgan, the rapporteur for the European Parliament Report on the Electricity Market which was adopted last July, and other Members of the European Parliament (MEP) have been organising around a declaration on Energy Poverty.
If more than half the MEPs sign the declaration by the 7th of November, the Commission is called upon to make a response. EAPN, EPSU (the European Federation of Public Service Unions), CECODHAS (the European Liaison Committee for Social Housing), AGE (the European Older People’s Platform) and FEANTSA (the European Federation of National Organisations Working with the Homeless) urge the MEPs who haven’t done so to sign the declaration!
The Declaration on tackling energy poverty in the European Union sends a clear message to the Commission and the Council to take urgent action by:
Proposing a Communication on tackling energy poverty
Getting Member States to provide national definitions and develop National Action Plans to eradicate energy poverty.
Assuming responsibility to monitor and coordinate national data and ensure that universal and public services obligations are respected.
EAPN will be actively monitoring the list of MEPs at national and EU level to see who have supported this important initiative.
