The President of the Republic of Austria, Dr. Heinz Fischer, attended the 4th Austrian meeting of self-organisations of people experiencing poverty in Vienna, from 6 to 8 March. Together with other high officials, educational organisations and social partners, the president took part in a ‘World-Café’ session, which provided an opportunity for direct contact with people experiencing poverty. The session was organised as a listening and learning experience for decision-makers whose day-to-day work can have a real impact on the situation of people experiencing poverty.
About 90 people from organisations of single mothers, unemployment initiatives, asylum-seeker groups, etc, took the chance to raise awareness of their daily realities, their problems but also their policy proposals. In order to also reach out a wider public, a street action in Vienna’s city centre was organised on the following day, referring also to the current economic crisis.
