This document is the contribution by EAPN to the Council of Europe NGO European Forum and European Anti-Racism Conference – Strasbourg, 11-13 October 2000.
Around 62 million people live below the poverty line in Europe. A growing number are poor because they are immigrants, enduring racism in many walks of social, economic, political and cultural life. By “immigrant”, we mean refugees, asylum seekers, displaced persons, travellers, gypsies, non-Community nationals and European citizens of non- European ethnic origin.
The European Anti-Poverty Network is pledged to bring all its activities to bear on eradicating poverty and wishes to stress that rooting out racism and poverty and social exclusion are two sides of the same fight.
