Why EAPN Denmark?
EAPN.DK is a network of voluntary NGO’s with a wide variety of missions but with one goal in common: “To work for the poor and the excluded of our society. We are organisations for socially excluded children, the sick, seniors, migrants, jobless and homeless people”.
Denmark is among the richest countries in the world and known for our high degree of equality and social security. To many a well known fact. What is not so well known is that inequality is growing in Denmark. And many academic studies show that with a rise in economic inequality follows a rise in crime, an increase in mental and physical health problems, a drop in life expectancy as well as an increased impact of poor social inheritance. The poor are the first victims but society as a whole suffers.
The 2020 reform plans from the Danish Parliament correlate closely with those of the EU and the Commission recommends them; still the Commission warns Denmark that it needs to target its citizens furthest from the work-market in order to maintain our flexicurity model as an economic safeguard for unemployed workers as well as a framework to provide Danish companies with a well-educated and flexible workforce.
EAPN – European Anti-Poverty Network
EAPN Denmark dates back to 1990 when the European Anti-Poverty Network was founded in Marseille by voluntary organisations from the EU member-countries. Today with an European secretariat in Brussels and national networks in all EU countries as well as in Norway, Iceland, and Macedonia.
We claim that the poor and the socially excluded of our society have the right to a dignified life, to be treated with respect, and to have equal access to education, health care, work, and democracy. We cannot accept that 20 percent of our school children leave school without a final exam, nor that 20 percent of our young adults do not get a vocational or upper school education. And certainly not that 20 percent of all adults are stuck on welfare schemes for more than nine months per year.
Objectives
EAPN.DK focuses on the debate about a Danish poverty line, on social benefit rates and rehabilitation, and on healthcare and employment.
Our main target is to influence the policy making by way of information, analyses, and campaigning. We fight for the rights of the 800.000 young and adult Danes who are on the edge of the job market and the healthcare system; and for children who are short of schooling. We are active operators in the Danish Stop Poverty Now initiative and have inspired the Government to abolish the so-called poverty rates and to improve transparency in the services.
We are concerned with the conditions of NGOs and their cooperation with local and national authorities because voluntary organisations become increasingly crucial actors to support rehabilitation and inclusion of marginalised citizens.
