On 16-17 November, exco members Goran Larsson and Arunas Svitojus and development officer Tanya Basarab went on a study visit to Latvia to discuss with local NGOs and government representatives the possibility to establish an anti poverty network in Latvia.
About 30 NGO representatives discussed the impact of the crisis on the people and the country. Soup kitchens are now a normal presence not only in towns but also in many rural communities. Tough budget measures have a direct impact on health, education and welfare system of the country. Job loss, salary cuts of about 30-40% and over-indebtedness are some of the consequences of the crisis increasing the number of people living in or at risk of poverty. EAPN spoke about its work to get better EU policies for combating poverty and about the preparations for the year 2010. The NGOs participating in the meeting created a working group to work on a plan to establish a national network.
