On 29 March, EAPN and BAPN – the Belgian Antipoverty Network, together with the Social Platform held an important meeting with President Van Rompuy’s Head of cabinet: Odile Renaud-Basso. The meeting focused on the follow up to the Spring Council and the need to get agreement from Member States in the June Council on the Commission’s proposals, particularly on setting a target to reduce poverty by 25% using the accepted relative poverty target.
EAPN expressed its thanks to Van Rompuy for the strong support to strengthening the social pillar in Europe 2020, and urged him to use his position to back the agreed target, and ensure a strong action plan on poverty, using a reinforced Social OMC, but investing in stronger EU social instruments. He was asked to ensure that a better structured dialogue was embedded with civil society organisations and people in poverty on the Europe 2020 strategy, but also in all policy fields and with all key EU institutions.
