In his speech, the President of EAPN stressed the contradiction between the new poverty-reduction target agreed by Member States last year in the framework of Europe 2020 and the lack of implementation at national level when it comes to tackling energy poverty.
Energy prices are still rising while the households’ income is stagnating or decreasing. So the way forward to tackle this growing phenomenon is to promote holistic and integrated national policies embracing the 3 components of energy poverty (i.e. low income, rise of energy prices and bad quality of dwellings in terms of energy efficiency) with national energy actions plans with national targets to eradicate energy poverty carefully monitored at EU level.
