On Monday 17 June, EAPN organised the second meeting of the European Vulnerable Consumers Steering Committee (VCSC) at the European Economic and Social Committee. This meeting, organised as part of EAPN’s policy orientation work within the ASSIST2GETHER project, gathered different European experts to discuss and exchange about how to tackle energy poverty in Europe.
The main objectives of the meeting were to:
- Share the results and raise awareness on the ASSIST2GETHER project activities and results;
- Discuss and contribute to the realization of the “Vulnerable Consumers Protection Framework Paper”, an important deliverable in the project that aims at illustrating political pathways or roadmaps to strengthen vulnerable consumers’ protection on the energy market; and
- Develop policy recommendations to tackle energy poverty at EU and national level
During the meeting, Maria Jeliazkova, from EAPN Bulgaria presented some policy proposals on tackling energy poverty, emphasizing the necessity to have “a multi-pillar, multi-layer and multi-level policy mix addressing energy poverty in the EU”. Members of the European VCSC had a vivid and fruitful exchange on the strengths and weaknesses of the existing policy measures, and on how to improve the mechanism for socially responsible and inclusive policy initiatives at EU and national level.
