The EAPN secretariat and members looks forward to collaborating in 2009 with all those concerned for a social Europe and to ensure a good preparation for 2010 and to ensure progress is made towards achieving the eradication of poverty and social exclusion.
Who will pay the price for the economic crisis that follows on from the financial crisis? Will the emphasis be on more redistributive tax systems or on cuts in public services and social protection systems? Will competitiveness or cooperation be the driving force to determine political choices?
These are some of the questions which will need to be addressed in 2009. EAPN is ready to contribute to ensure that the perspective of people experiencing poverty is included in the answers to these questions.
It is the dream of EAPN that out of this financial scandal can emerge a renewed sense of purpose for our democratic institutions so that they clearly see their role as to overcome the politics of greed and ensure a decent society for all. This is what will be needed in 2009 if we are to prepare well for a successful 2010 – EU Year Against Poverty and Social Exclusion.
