EAPN organised a closed roundtable during the afternoon of 3 May with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Olivier De Schutter, the European Commission and representatives of ministries of Portugal and Slovenia, along with our members in Portugal, Slovenia and France. It gave the UN Special Rapporteur a chance to reflect on the connectons of the Action Plan on the European Pillar of Social Rights to international human rights law and frameworks and to present the findings from his recent mission to the EU. Member States could exchange on the Action Plans targets and the Council recommendation on Minimum Income due in 2022, and got input from anti-poverty organisations. The Action Plan was declared at the Porto Social Summit 4 days after our event – see our statement here.
During the morning, our Belgium, French, Italian and Spanish people experiencing poverty members heard from the UN Special Rapporteur about how the input he heard in his consultation with them has been used in his report, due out in June 2021. Members provided more insight into the current state of minimum income schemes and child poverty in light of the upcoming Council Recommendation and Child Guarantee. He wanted to acknowledge the valuable contribution made by people experiencing poverty to his report, in this good practice example of participation.
