EAPN Director Barbara Helfferich chairing Greens/EFA debate making economic governance serve social justice
On 17 October 2013, International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, EAPN Director Barbara Helfferich will be chairing a public conference organised by – the Greens/EFA Group on “Making Economic governance serve social justice”. Green MEPs, experts and stakeholders will discuss and debate a response to the Commission proposal on the “Social Dimension of the EMU”.
After a presentation of the Commission proposal on the “Social Dimension of the EMU” by Georg Fischer (European Commission, Director, DG Employment & Social Affairs), the debate will focus on two key issues regarding the social dimension of the economic and monetary union, namely the scoreboard to measure social and employment developments and a European Stabilizer Scheme to address the social justice side while stabilizing the economies. Dr. Sonja Bekker from the University Tilburg, Prof. Sebastien Dullien from the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin and Marije Cornelissen (MEP) and Elisabeth Schroedter (MEP) will comment on the Commission proposal to open the discussion.

EAPN speaks in event hosted by MEP Dennis de Jong: Poverty Reduction – Bridging the Gap
On 16 October, EAPN Policy coordinator Sian Jones will speak on the role of Europe 2020 and the current state of play of the European Semester in the fight against poverty, along with Sonja Leemkuil, from EAPN Netherlands, who will give her testimony.
Emmaus, Eurodiaconia, Salvation Army, Caritas, Social Platform, ATD Fourth World, Conference of European churches, European Committee of Social Rights from the Council of Europe, Social Affairs of the Permanent Representative Belgium will also take part. The event will end with the presentation of the conclusions of the Intergroup on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights.

- 10/10 – BAPN press conference and national action: “Stop impoverishment policies”
On Thursday 10 October, BAPN organizes a press conference in the Belgian federal Parliament to denounce the current policies as creating more poverty and exclusion and to put forward concrete recommendations for all citizens to live in dignity. The press conference will be followed by a national action at 10:30 in the Rue de l’Education (behind the Parliament), with a march going backwards, marking the regressive state of affairs. - 17/10 – The Walloon network against poverty (RWLP) organises demonstration, film screening, theatre and debate in Namur

- 13/10 – The Flemish network against poverty, Netwerk tegen armoede, member of BAPN, demonstrates in Brussels

13-19/10 – More than 700,000 people in Scotland live in low income households. In a rich country like ours this is unnecessary and unacceptable.
Challenge Poverty Week is an opportunity for you to help fight poverty and hardship in Scotland.
The main aims of the week are to:
- Highlighting the reality of poverty and challenge the stereotypes about exist about it;
- Demonstrate what is being done across Scotland to address poverty
- Increase public support for more action to combat poverty

EAPN Spain news
From 14 to 29 October, EAPN Spain organizes, in collaboration with various organizations, a series of events around the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This day reminds us that poverty and social exclusion are a reality that affects more than 1,000 million people worldwide, and also increasing to frightening levels in Spain and Europe as a whole, with the crisis and cuts in social budgets that are only worsening the situation.
In Madrid, we have prepared a photographic exhibition at the Atocha station from 14 to 24 October , the screening of the film ‘Welcome’ on the 16th in the Fine Arts, the awards ceremony of our contests digital-photography stories and day 17 at CaixaForum and two monologues ‘of poverty and the shamelessness’ with Juan Aroca , the 14th at Beer Station and 29th in Parrot Chocita. In addition, our regional networks are orgainsing events in all the Autonomous Communities, to put poverty and social exclusion in the spotlight, raise public awareness about the importance of the engagement of citizens and of governments, essential to eradicate poverty and inequality. - Initiatives around combating poverty and social exclusion as a legacy of the 2010 European Year – The Initiative “Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion (from the 2010 European Year), has had great success in drawing attention on issues related to poverty and social exclusion, notably thanks to the involvement of a large number of private and public organizations. In the year 2012, 209 entities throughout the country joined this initiative, with several actions to remember the importance of combating poverty and social exclusion. - 5th National Forum of People Experiencing Poverty – The 5th Forum will take place in Lisbon (Costa da Caparica) under the theme of “Fundamental rights and Citizenship”, on 14-15 October. Macedonian Anti-Poverty Platform: debate on decent minimum income!

EAPN CYPRUS conference on unemployment and troika measures
18/10 – EAPN Cyprus organizes its 2nd Annual Conference on 18 October on unemployment with special focus on youth unemployment and troika measures that resulted in the increase in unemployment in Cyprus. This one-day event, from 9.30am till 6.30pm, include a set of parallel workshops on 3 specific issues: 1. The financial crisis as a cause of unemployment, 2. The impact of unemployment on everyday life – recently unemployed people will present their cases and discuss with participants 3. Migration and Unemployment, where migrants in Cyprus that have lost their jobs will discuss the issue.see programme here.
EAPN Poland holds debate of challenges in fight against poverty and participation of people
EAPN Poland is organising a debate on 17 October “Participation of people experiencing poverty and the strategies and programmes against poverty and social exclusion: challenges 2014-2020”.
The debate will be divided in 3 parts. 1) Participation of people experiencing poverty in society and in local communities. 2) The National Programme against poverty and social exclusion and 3) what we can do to fight poverty in a new period of structural funds. - SAPN make’s steps towards cooperation with Social Ministry
SAPN also co-organised a conference “Social Inclusion: let’s try together achieve more” with Sociofórum NGO and the Ministry of labour, social affairs and family on 1 October 2013. Back in March 2013, the Ministry signed a Declaration formally expressing its will to cooperate with civil society on the preparation, implementation and assessment of social policies. This Declaration was prepared in cooperation with SAPN and Sociofórum. The conference aimed at exchanging on key tasks around social policy and social protection, the challenges and available instruments to solve them as well as on the desired developments in these areas. The conference was opened by the State Secretary of the Ministry Jozef Burian and Zuzana Kusá, Chair of the Slovak Anti-Poverty Network. Zuzana Kusá recalled the 5th anniversary of the European Commission Recommendation on Active Inclusion and that the idea of three-pillar integrated approach to mitigate poverty (adequate income, access to decent jobs and access to various types of services) hasn’t been implemented so far. EAPN Norway (Velferdsalliansen) holds seminar
17/10 – Velferdsalliansen/EAPN Norway in cooperation with BIKUBEN and SISA – one of the member organizations – organize a seminar for disadvantaged people in Harstad in Northern Norway. This is combined with the second annual membership meeting of Velferdsalliansen/EAPN Norway.
This will be an opportunity to deal with employment issues, opportunities, challenges, strengthening self-confidence and networking. The seminar will give special focus to the participation of people experiencing poverty and communications. The seminar is open to all. See EAPN Norway website www.velferdsalliansen.no.
Poverty Intergroup meeting : 17th October 2013 : International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the Intergroup “Extreme Poverty and Human Rights, Fourth World committee” will hold a public meeting in the European Parliament room JAN 4Q1, on Thursday 17th October 2013 from 15:00 to 18:00.
This year’s event will focus on the theme nominated by the United Nations : Working together towards a world without discrimination: building on the experience and knowledge of people in extreme poverty.
