The EU needs to give clear indications that Member State cooperation in the field of Social Protection and Social Inclusion will ensure that the needs of people experiencing poverty and social exclusion are addressed in the response to the economic crisis and not just the needs of banks and industry. It is, in a nutshell, the main message EAPN sent today to the EU Ministers of Employment and Social Affairs on the eve of the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council (EPSCO).
For EAPN this means that in the first place there must be significant investment to improve the adequacy of minimum income schemes. Such investment as well as being necessary for people living in poverty is also good for the economy as the investment will immediately be put back into the economy in the form of spending on essential goods and services.
