06/02 – The Scottish Living Wage Campaign called on the Scottish Government to take a more proactive role in advocating for the living wage in both the public and private sector. The call came following the publication of the Scottish Parliament Local Government and Regeneration Committee’s report in to the living wage. Download press release
Time to Stop the Stigma! Media needs to base benefit reporting on facts not fiction
After a week of news linking unemployment and fraudulent benefit claims to migrants, anti-poverty groups are calling for the reporting of benefit issues to be based on the facts, not fiction. The ‘Stick Your Labels’! Campaign, the first anti-poverty stigma campaign in the UK, has slammed the some of the reporting of the issue of so called ‘benefits tourism’, which blatantly overstated the problem. Whether it is the ‘benefits cap’ or the role of migrants in the UK, we need to debate the real problems in our welfare system, rather than relying on old myths that only serve to stigmatise those who need support.
