But there is another side to the EU, one that is supposed to ensure that all European citizens can live in dignity and free of poverty. In the light of the current crisis, this conference theme was ‘What Future for Social Europe?’
The conference was organised by the Poverty Alliance and the European Parliament Office in Scotland. The aim was to look at how we got into the current crisis and how we can get out of it, and ultimately, how we can have a more social Europe. Speakers included Katherine Duffy, European Anti-Poverty Network; Mike Allen, the Poor Can’t Pay Campaign (Ireland) and Professor Laura Cram, University of Strathclyde. The final session was made up of a panel of politicians outlining how they believed we can create a more social Europe.
The conference took place on 21st November in Edinburgh at the Apex International Hotel.
