EAPN Ireland: Reduction in Poverty Rates Welcome, but European Anti-Poverty Network Ireland Warns of Huge Challenges for 2010
Responding to the publication of the Survey on Income and Living Conditions, Anna Visser Director of the European Anti-Poverty Network Ireland, welcomed the 2.1% fall in the at risk of poverty rate but warned of significant challenges ahead for 2010. The full report is available from www.cso.ie.
A series of 10 FREE seminars, January-March 2010 – 2010 will be a significant year in the fight against poverty.
On the 11-12 December an important working conference was held in Pamplona, Spain, which developed and agreed the Pamplona Declaration for a pro-active exit strategy from the crisis delivering on social inclusion.
From 26 till 28 November, EAPN Spain held its General Assembly in Valencia, involving over 200 participants from EAPN networks from nearly all autnonomous regions. The Collectif SSIG (Social Services of General Interest Group) welcomes the French Parliament’s initiative to transpose in France the Community principle of protection of missions of general interest of social services, notably as it explicitly excludes the Services Directive.

Speaking in advance of the Social Inclusion Forum on 4 November, Anna Visser, Director of the European Anti-Poverty Network Ireland, welcomed the Government’s efforts to actively seek out the views of people experiencing poverty and social exclusion in the context of economic and social policy making.
On 22 October, EAPN and its national members started to write to EP members to support a Parliamentary Declaration (0056/2009) which calls on Member States and the Commission to defend social rights in the crisis. Read EAPN’s letter, EAPN Spain’s and now EAPN Ireland’s.
On 12 and 13 November, several national networks (FNARS, UNIOPSS, Secours Catholique, Fondation de l’Armée du Salut, Croix rouge Française, UNCCAS, Advocacy) and local networks (FNARS Basse-Normandie, URIOPSS Basse Normandie, Commission régionale « dire et réagir ensemble » made of users and professionals, ATD Fourth-World, CAF du Calvados, IRTS de Basse-Normandie) organized a national meeting on the participation of citizens, in Caen.
