Tribute to Göran Larsson

In July we heard the sad news that our friend and colleague Goran Larsson passed away in the presence of his wife and family. EAPN members and secretariat would like to pay the following tributes to Goran and to pass on our sympathies to his wife, family and friends.

As Director of EAPN I had the privilege to get to know Goran. I highly appreciated his supportive presence, his great sense of humour and his absolute commitment to fighting poverty.  He will be missed by many. Goran was a member of the EAPN European level Executive Committee on behalf of the Salvation Army from 1998 to 2012.

EAPN participates in EU Conference Jobs for Europe

On 6-7 September, the European Commission organised a major, high-level conference dealing with employment issues. This event comes after the release, in April this year, of the Employment Package, a comprehensive set of initiatives aimed at boosting job creation and reforming labour markets.

EAPN’s core demands well reflected in in its input from 2012 in new SPC report on Tackling child poverty and promoting child well-being

The new SPC report on Tackling child poverty and promoting child well-being was adopted on 27 June. The annex of the report includes the summary of stakeholder consultation, including EAPN’s. This will form the basis of the Communication and the Recommendation on Child Poverty due out by the end of the year. EAPN’s core demands in its input from 2012, are well reflected, particularly in an increased focus on adequate income support – including access to quality jobs and social protection/social security “considering the different costs related to different age ranges and complementing income support through in-kind benefits e.g. childcare, health, housing, etc. including ‘maintaining an appropriate balance between universal policies and targeted approaches’.

EAPN holds Hearing in the EP: MAKING ACTIVE INCLUSION HAPPEN IN TIMES OF CRISIS – 12/07/2012

In Nov 2012, Monika Flašíková Beňová (MEP, S&D) asked an oral question on the NRP, explicitly referencing EAPN. 

European Council 28-29 June summarized by EAPN

The main new element is the new Compact for Growth and Jobs and re-focussing of Structural Funds to this end, with gains for youth unemployment, research, innovation, SME’s, and a reference to implementing effective policies to combat poverty and support vulnerable groups.. but with no detail.
