European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) Opinion on the European Platform Against Poverty and Social Exclusion

EESC’s Opinion on the European Platform Against Poverty and Social Exclusion was approved at the end of June. It was passed unanimously, with 3 abstentions. The Opinion is available in several languages on: http://www.eesc.europa.eu/?i=portal.en.soc-opinions.14953.

Sian Jones, EAPN’s Policy Coordinator, was asked to contribute to the work of the opinion as expert for the rapporteur Maureen O’Neill (Scotland), together with Caritas and Henri Lourdelle from ETUC as experts for the Social Committee.

EAPN Ireland: Irish Government can prove that we’re all “stronger in Europe by supporting European target to reduce poverty

On 26 March, the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN) Ireland welcomed the decision by European Union Heads of State to make the reduction of Poverty one of the 5 key objectives and targets for the EU’s new Europe 2020 strategy for the next decade. However, EAPN Ireland has expressed considerable concern that a decision on the adoption of poverty targets and progress indicators has been deferred until June.

GUE/NLP Conference: 31 May: Resistance and Alternatives: Austerity and the dismantling of social Europe

{jathumbnail}EAPN contributed to this participative conference organized by GUE/NLP together with some of the main European social movements (ATTAC, Euromemorandum, Transform, CADTM, European Social Forum and Joint Social conference, amongst others) which highlighted the social impact of the crisis and Austerity  measures in the context of the EU’s economic governance package, including the Euro Plus Pact.
