EAPN Ireland: Irish Government can prove that we’re all “stronger in Europe by supporting European target to reduce poverty

On 26 March, the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN) Ireland welcomed the decision by European Union Heads of State to make the reduction of Poverty one of the 5 key objectives and targets for the EU’s new Europe 2020 strategy for the next decade. However, EAPN Ireland has expressed considerable concern that a decision on the adoption of poverty targets and progress indicators has been deferred until June.

GUE/NLP Conference: 31 May: Resistance and Alternatives: Austerity and the dismantling of social Europe

{jathumbnail}EAPN contributed to this participative conference organized by GUE/NLP together with some of the main European social movements (ATTAC, Euromemorandum, Transform, CADTM, European Social Forum and Joint Social conference, amongst others) which highlighted the social impact of the crisis and Austerity  measures in the context of the EU’s economic governance package, including the Euro Plus Pact.

PES conference: A Fair Growth model

{jathumbnail}31/05 – EAPN participated in this key conference organized by the PES and the PES Group in the CoR calling for a new, fairer growth model. The crucial role of regions and cities in the definition of fair growth and the implementation of innovative measures to achieve it was underlined.

National Networks lobbying on the Europe 2020 strategy

In this period EAPN National Networks have been busy lobbying their National Governments to support the poverty target in the Europe 2020 Strategy.  Most Networks have written to their Prime Ministers and have been in touch with officials in the relevant Ministries. EAPN Belgium had a series of meetings with Ministers and cabinets of Ministers and has a meeting with their Prime Minister in advance of the Spring Council.
