09/10/2015 – Labour markets and social indicators in the EU continue to gradually improve, benefitting from the strengthening in economic activity, according to the latest edition of the Quarterly Employment and Social Situation Review.
In 2015, as part of the ‘DRIVERS for Health Equity’ project, EAPN published a report and synthesis of case-study evidence on income and social protection, which is a joint EAPN and Centre for health Equity Studies (CHESS) work. Authored by Fiona McHardy with Olle Lundberg, this research undertook a case study approach exploring in a comparative country context, the impact of social protection system, both operations and provisions, on health inequality, in Hungary, Poland, UK, Sweden and Portugal. Social Ministers must press for a genuine social and democratic Semester in 2014 to back a credible EU
Brussels, 09 December 2013 – The European Anti-poverty Network (EAPN), comprising thousands of organizations working in all Member States of the EU to eradicate poverty, expressed their disappointment with the Commission’s Annual Growth Survey package (AGS) in the context of spiraling poverty rates. EAPN’s letter addressed to Social Ministers prior to the EPSCO Council on 9-10 December called on social ministers to press for concrete changes to ensure a more social and participative/democratic Semester in 2014, if credibility in EU is to be restored in this crucial pre-election period.

17/09/2015 – The Commission’s proposal for a Recommendation on the reintegration of the long-term unemployed is now out. EAPN broadly welcomes the initiative, but highlights important shortfall, such as insufficient references to adequate income support; hidden risks of negative activation based on sanctions and punitive measures; the absence of references to quality of work and employment; no mention of the role and involvement of civil society organisations.
