EU Alliance for Investing in Children | Juncker’s Investment Plan – Investing in social progress, human capital, health and education

Press Statement of the EU Alliance for Investing in Children on the occasion of the European Parliament’s adoption of the European Fund for Strategic Investments

25/06/2015 – The EU Alliance for Investing in Children welcomes the European Parliament’s adoption of the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) – yesterday during their plenary session in Brussels. MEPs have added important provisions on how the EFSI should be allocated which will ensure long-term strategic investments and societal progress, such as investment in targeted social policies in line with the 2013 Social Investment Package and support of projects in the fields of human capital, culture, education and health. In addition, we welcome the inclusion that the EFSI should contribute to achieving the Europe 2020 targets. However, the Alliance for Investing in Children regrets that investing in education from an early age is no longer explicitly mentioned in the adopted text. There is considerable evidence on the benefits of investing in early childhood education and care for all children for achieving long term results in tackling poverty, exclusion and unemployment.

19/03/2014 – March 31st marks the end of the winter break, which means evictions suspended during winter will resume and emergency winter accomodation facilities closing down. While figures of the Barometer 115 for the month of February 2014 show an extreme saturation of the accommodation in the 37 departments studied with only 44% of accommodation requests that were responded to (55% in Paris), several hundreds of places will close down on March 31 without any solution for people.

Brussels, 19 March 2013 – EAPN expresses its support to all Hungarian non-governmental initiatives mobilising to draw attention both inside and outside of the country on the new instruments recently integrated into the Fundamental Law, which replaced in 2011 the Constitution of Hungary. These instruments further threaten democracy, social inclusion and human rights in Hungary. EAPN calls on the European Union institutions and all other relevant international actors to put pressure on the Hungarian Government and the Hungarian Parliament to reconsider and withdraw these recent amendments and the ‘anti-poor’ policies that accompany them.

Human Right to Water and Sanitation must be in the Sustainable Development Goals!

24/06/2015 – This week negotiations on the final text for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are taking place in the UN. The outcome should be the final agreement that world leaders will sign for in the Summit in September. The current document being discussed is the “Zero-Draft” in which we want to see an explicit mention of the Human Right to Water and Sanitation in the final text, as stated and drafted by the NGO Mining Working Group.
